Education ain’t easy

I guess it’s a bonus but this shelter in place time has offered opportunity to pay closer attention to school board meetings and the work of school board members. The task set before them is a critical one that takes a great capacity to listen, think, question and decide what is the best way to educate all students within district boundaries. I do not envy them.

Even so, I was very encouraged while ‘attending’ the local high school district’s last board meeting. This was their second time hearing detail and discussing plans for educating students during a pandemic. I thought they did a good job of asking questions about how to keep students and staff (teachers as well as non-teaching employees) safe as they fulfill the mandate to continue with schooling in the middle of a pandemic.

It brings to mind how important it is to remember and understand what we are electing school board members to do. These meetings are always public and any voting person should attend at least a couple of them during any given school year to see a board in action. Go a step further and give feedback when you see fit.

Education is a critical part of building a strong community and the work of a school board has an impact on that education.
