It’s almost wash day!

That video is from 2017 and most of my wash day routine has not changed - I’m not surprised. This routine has developed over much trial and error since 2005! The biggest thing I’ve learned over that time frame is patience. If you take the time to learn how your hair grows out of your head and what it feels like it in it’s most natural state you’ll have the main part of knowing how to keep it healthy.  It’s also important to get help and advice from a professional - I have learned so much from MoKnowsHair.

I’m 6 or 7 months into consistently using a curling iron and effectively growing out my ‘fro but the basics of my wash day have not changed much from this:

  • I wash my hair while I shower starting my letting the water run over my strands until they are fully saturated (2 to 3 mins). Then I massage the scalp while under the water stream - using the water to loosen dirt and oil. (I typically don’t pre-poo anymore. If I do, I use the scalp cleanser from the Mo Knows Hair Collection at Sally Beauty)

  • I shampoo the hair twice. Most often, I use the Don’t Despair Repair shampoo from Briogeo. After the second shampooing I gently massage the scalp again with the water to make sure all suds are gone and allow the water to thoroughly moisturize the strands.

  • Then I condition with a conditioner that only needs to stay on 3 or 4 mins. As a rule, I use the conditioner from the same line as the shampoo. The Don’t Despair Repair Conditioning Mask has been a game changer for me. I apply it and then put on a shower cap and, after 3 or 4 mins, rinse out. Of course, ending with one last water/scalp massage.

  • I don’t towel dry - instead i go right into applying wet leave-ins - Aphogee Kertain sprayed on the strands & Chi Total Protect - comb through - let air dry for 5 - 7 mins

  • Apply Chi Silk Infusion - comb through - air dry a little more for another 5 - 7 mins

  • Blow Dry high heat high air end with cool shot - curl small sections with a ceramic curling iron at 350°
